Got Refs?
The severe shortage of full-time rugby referees in Michigan has prompted the MRFU to take several steps to encourage and assist any person interested in taking up refereeing on a full-time basis. Our goal is to train and develop as many referees as possible as rapidly as possible.

While there is a definite need for both part-time and full-time referees, MRFU is putting a special emphasis on developing full-time referees. You will find attached the MRFU Referee Development Plan as well as information concerning several upcoming referee clinics. The development plan lays out various incentives to people willing to take up the whistle. Examples of these incentives are increased game-day pay, reimbursement of referee clinic fees, post-referee clinic coaching and evaluating, as well as various bonus plans for persons officiating a set amount of games in a given season.

It is not overstating things to say that trained and certified referees have an excellent opportunity for rapid advancement up the local, regional, as well as national refereeing ladder. USA Rugby Refereeing has severe aging and numbers issues that needs to be addressed immediately. I can promise that anyone willing to take the referee clinics and officiate games will get the full support of the MRFU, both financially and educationally. This support will extend to those who eventually want to pursue refereeing beyond Michigan's borders.

The fact that the MRFU is emphasizing full-time refereeing should not deter persons interested in officiating 2-4 games during each of the Spring and Fall seasons. We shouldn't experience the current game-day shortages if we are able to have a sufficient mix of part-time and full-time personnel

Whether you are interested in part-time or full-time refereeing, the time to get involved is now! The various rugby clinics currently scheduled are not always readily available. If you want to take the clinic, you need to contact me immediately so we can make arrangements for class supplies.
